The Toronto Vintners Club recently tasted through a number of 2002 Chardonnay's from Ontario, California and Australia. It was a fascinating tasting and I was eager to see how the Tawse held up against some pretty stiff competition (having enjoyed the Tawse so much recently).
The write-up and results from the event are now online.
Here's the overall group ranking...
1. Tawse Winery Chardonnay Reserve Beamsville Bench
2. Petaluma Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay Piccadilly Valley
3. Lafond 'Sweeney Canyon Vineyard' Chardonnay Santa Rita Hills
4. Iron Horse Chardonnay, Sonoma County, Green Valley
5. Stratus Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve
6. Penfolds Yattarna South Australia (by far the most expensive wine at the tasting)
7. Henry of Pelham Chardonnay Speck Family Reserve
8. Sonoma-Cutrer 'Les Pierres' Chardonnay Sonoma Valley
Impressive showing for the Tawse. Personally, I had the Lafond slightly higher than the Tawse and found the Henry of Pelhams Speck to be better than the group thought.
The thing that was striking at the tasting was how close all of these wines were. After my top 2, it was almost impossible for me to decide on the remaining ranks. The scores of 5 of the wines were within a point.
